Cigarette smoke is something that I’ve been affected by all of my life. My mother used to smoke, for years and years. I still remember the smell that would linger in my clothes. Growing up, I was diagnosed with Asthma. At that point it was vital to my health to stay away from cigarette smoke, my mom knew that she had to find a way to quit smoking.
It’s funny when you can remember things from your younger years, just bits and pieces, but all of those pieces help to tell a story. I was very young and naive, but clearly remember my mom stashing her “quit smoking” gum in a drawer of her dresser. I don’t remember much of her struggles during this process. However, the effort alone to finally quit smoking meant the world to me as a child.
I now have a child of my own that has the same Asthma illness. Thankfully, because of my mom’s ability to quit smoking, I have learned about the importance of being smoke free and now my son can lead a healthy life too.
To quit smoking, can be one of the hardest things that you will do in your life. In fact, 85% of attempts to quit smoking are unaided and many are not successful until the 7th try.
Many smokers are unaware of the information and tools available. There are two major factors that play into tobacco cessation:
- Problem #1: Overcoming the physical addiction to nicotine.
- Problem #2: Overcoming the psychological or emotional cravings for nicotine.
To overcome these two problems, there are two solutions for quitting smoking:
- Solution #1: Pharmacotherapy or Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
- Solution #2: Behavioral Support.
