Disney Crafts for Children – Savings Jar

I’m not a crafty person but this Disney savings jar sure makes me look like one!

I’m the typical Pinterest user, pinning every recipe, craft and diy project with no intentions on doing it myself. This Disney savings jar was a craft that I’ve seen several variations of. Since we are planning our first trip to Disney World in 2015, I knew this would be an easy project to get my feet wet.

One of the tools needed is a Silhouette Cameo, we received one for review just in time for this project. The Silhouette Cameo is an electronic cutting machine with capabilities to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more up to 12″ wide and 10 feet long.

Other materials needed – Disney Crafts for Children – Savings Jar:

1 Sheet or Roll of black vinyl

Ribbons for accent

1 jar with lid

Contact paper or transfer paper

Exacto Knife

I won’t lie, when the Silhouette Cameo arrived at my house it sat in the box for some time. I’ve been watching YouTube videos to get an idea of how much learning needed to be done for a simple project.

I really should have jumped into it sooner because after the PC/Mac Silhouette software was installed, use of the Cameo machine was so simple.

The Silhouette Cameo works by connecting to your computer via a USB cord.

Then comes the creation of your cutout.

Mickey Mouse’s head is pretty simple to draw out. Consisting of circles all connected together, you can use the shape tool to make Mickey’s head as big or small as you want.

TIP: When overlapping shapes, make sure that you right click on the shapes and “meld” them together. I made a mistake of not doing that and my first cutout didn’t have the ears connected to the head.

Though I created my own shapes, there are several designs available from within the Silhouette application. Some are included and some can be purchased for as little as .99 cents.

After creating Mickey’s head, I just used the text tool and typed in Disney (using the Waltograph font) and then the year was typed in with the KG Next to Me Solid font.

Really, designing was that easy!

When you are done designing, take your vinyl paper and stick it to your cutting mat. Push the enter button and the Silhouette Cameo will feed in your paper.

Click on “Send to Silhouette” and watch your Cameo do all of the work.

We’ve been saving for our Disney World trip for some time, but now it’s even more fun for the family. Our new Disney savings jar is a fun reminder of our goals and the kids love to find change and put it into the jar.

We finished our Disney Savings jar off with a red/white ribbon combined with a black satin ribbon.

It’s cute as can be and so easy to do, even for a beginner.
