If you’re anything like me, you have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. That’s because the spring brings much more than just great weather and sun. It also brings with it…. the dreaded spring time allergies! You can run and hide all you want, but the allergies seem to always make it to you!

In fact, this year, we learned a very important lesson. When spring allergies began hitting my family hard, we sought relief inside of our home. Only then did we realize, we seemed to be hit much harder INSIDE than were outdoors. That’s because although homes are becoming more energy efficient, they are also trapping more pollutants! Indoor pollutant levels are generally 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels these days.

Pollen, dust, and mold spores are some of the most common indoor air pollutants, which lead to these pesky allergies.

Here are a few tips we took to reduce allergens in our home:

• Change your air filters regular. I use Filtrete Filters, and switch them regularly to help reduce air pollutants in my home.

• Open windows when dusting – No need to have a whirlwind of dust trapped inside your home

• Vacuum carpets after each and every time that you dust – This is important since what goes up, must come down. When you take the time to dust, it’s inevitable that these pollutants will be stirred into the air, and likely your carpet and furniture. After dusting (especially when it’s been awhile between dustings) be sure to vacuum your carpet and clean your furniture regularly.

These tips are great not only in the spring, but also year round. Homes can house many hidden allergens, and it’s important to be aware of them. Keep these in mind next time you find yourself rushing indoors when your allergies decide to strike!
