Protect Your Teens from the Social Networking Dangers on Facebook

As parents we all have concerns about our teens’ using Facebook. We want to trust our children but in this digital age Facebook can be a very scary place for parents of teens.

Today’s teens are often oblivious to the dangers that they face online from friends both real and deceptive. SociallyKnow gives parents the tools and information that they need, allowing them to decide if there is an issue that needs to be addressed with the child.

Did you know that 71% of teen girls and 67% of teen boys have shared a sexual message or picture with a boyfriend or girlfriend?

And 34% of 8-18 year olds have at least one Facebook friend that they have never met?

How it Works

The SociallyKnow website monitors the child’s social interactions in real time, flagging key words, phrases and photos that may need your attention.

Any time your child receives a message that is sexually explicit, bullying, verbally abusive, vulgar or suicidal in nature, parents will receive an email or text message to let them know.

Alerts are also sent any time your child receives a new “friend” request, tagged in a new photo and where your child is “checking in” on Facebook.

“Our subscribers tell us they love the fact that SociallyKnow sifts through all the chatter on their teen’s Facebook pages to pinpoint the areas of greatest concern,” said Dawson.  “Very few parents are interested in ‘spying’ on their kids.  They just want to know when there’s a potential for harm, before it’s too late.”

There’s such a fine line between keeping your kids safe and giving them their privacy. Sounds like this service helps out with that. Mine aren’t old enough yet… but in a few years! :)

My sister in law was recently VERY upset when her 13 year old son saw some very adult pictures on another (grown up) family members facebook page. She didn’t even have to have this site because she was friends with tha tperson too. Funny how a lot of people don’t even THINK about their younger friends when posting stuff online.

Great post and it’s good to know that others recognize the dangers. It’s not just teens, either… I have a friend who’s over 30 and is…. well, just as naive when it comes to social networking as some teens and younger kids are. She simply doesn’t recognize the dangers.

This is a great idea. My son is only 12 so he is not allowed a facebook account yet. There is a lot of scary stuff and people out there.

I’m off to look, but my problem is that my son is aware of these type of things.

I think he’d (if he hasn’t already) just make a facebook account under another name, and that is what I need help monitoring. So far, the only thing I’ve come up with is keylogging software.

Parenting a teen keeps one on their toes for sure!

Thank you for posting this! My kids are a long way out from being able to be on social networking sites, but it is nice to know that there is some kind of protection for parents.

I’m not completely sure, but I think kids under 13 years old can’t register a Facebook account. Of course, that age restriction won’t stop all teens. It’s great knowing that SociallyKnow is available to monitor your kids’ activities. Thanks!

This sounds like a really good idea! Especially since the danger of social networking sites to young, naive children. I personally think that sites like these should not be available to those younger than age 16.

I’m not sure how I feel about kids having social networking pages but it’s nice to know that something like this exists to help make it safer.
