What happens when the power goes out in your house?

Stumble down the hallway, slip down the stairs, dig through the cabinets in search for a flashlight and find that none of your flashlights have working batteries, any of these things sound familiar?

Luckily, the power lines are all underground at our house and the power has only gone out a few times since living here. My mom’s house is another story. When I lived at home, we experienced power outages all of the time. Strong thunderstorms, strong winds, ice storms, you name it.. just look at her house the wrong way and the power goes out.

With winter coming and high likely hood of more power outages, I wanted to help my mom be prepared. My mom didn’t want anything screwed into her walls and definitely didn’t want to deal with wiring, so we decided to give the Mr Beams Readybright Starter House Kit a try.

What’s Included with the Readybright Starter House Kit:

  • 1 Power Outage Flashlight
  • 1 Path Light
  • 1 Ceiling Light

Setup was so easy to do! We installed a few batteries into the backs of each light, and then hung them up on the wall. The kit does come with screws to attach the lights to your walls, however we decided to use some easy release sticky wall hangers and they worked perfectly.

The ceiling light and path light both work together in connection with the Power Outage Flashlight. The Power Outage Flashlight plugs into any of your outlets, when the power goes out in your home a signal is then sent from the flashlight to the other lights that you have installed and they will instantly turn on, giving you up to 40 hours of bright light.

The Power Outage Flashlight can also be removed from the outlet to use as a flashlight any time you need it.

My mother’s home is a ranch style home, and there is a long main hallway that connects from the bedrooms to the other side of her house which has the kitchen and her living room.

Because of the hallway length, we decided to install the ceiling light at the end of her hallway on the wall. This way when her lights go out, the entire hallway will illuminate.

The biggest concern with power outages is my mother trying to go down the stairs into the basement with no lights on. She has two levels of stairs going into her basement that turn into an “L” shape, connecting the two levels is an awkward stair that is the shape of a triangle.

Everyone falls down on this stair even with the lights on, so you can imagine my concern in the dark.

This area of her house was perfect for the path light. I installed the path light on the landing, so when the power goes out both levels of her stairs will be lighted.

How Does It Work?

Since installing the Mr Beams Readybright Lights into my mothers home, the power has gone out one time. Instantly, as the power went out she saw the flashlight in her outlet turn on. Within seconds, the other two lights that we installed turned on as well.

I personally loved how easy the Readybright lights were to install and they worked exactly as they were supposed to. This is a great way to supplement light in your home during a power outage and doesn’t require an electrician or mad scientist skills to install.

What’s it like in your house when the power goes out?
