Operation : Learning How To Ride a Bike | Joovy Bicycoo

How do I teach my child to ride a bike?

This is a question I’ve been pondering. Andrew is 4 years old and has been asking for a big kid bike so he can ride like his neighborhood friends. He barely learned how to ride a tricycle so I wondered how well he would take onto riding a two wheeler at only 4 years old.

I contacted Joovy to talk to them about the Joovy Bicycoo Balance Bike. We talked about how it would help improve his confidence while learning to balance, how it would give the look of a big kid bike like he wanted, and how it would help him with a seamless transition into a bigger bike next year. I loved that Joovy’s customer service made me feel good about my decision to try out a Bicycoo Balance Bike.

red and white balance bike

Some great features of the Joovy Bicycoo Balance Bike:

  • Light aluminum frame for easy control of the bike
  • Refillable 12-inch pneumatic (air) tires
  • Hand brake for the rear tire
  • Adjustable Seat
  • Made for kids 3 years or older, up to 55 Lbs.

pneumatic tires

Before going with the Joovy Bicycoo we checked out a few other balance bikes on the market. The difference that I found was in the construction of this bike. The tires are like real bike tires, refillable with air, and have a nice suspension that gives your child a smoother ride. Other bikes had hard plastic tires, you know the kind that wear down quickly and lose traction as your child uses it.

The frame of the Joovy Bicycoo Balance Bike is so lightweight. I wasn’t sure how this would benefit Andrew until I saw him use it. Lifting the bike was easy to do for a 4 year old, and because it was light he was also able to maneuver the bike without any effort at all.

boy riding balance bike

Andrew has been using the Joovy Bicycoo Balance Bike for a few weeks now.

When he first started to use it we noticed there was a lot of walking the bike around, kind of like what they do as toddlers when playing on push toys.

It was cool to watch Andrew’s progress over the last few weeks, his confidence has increased ten fold and totally knows how to use the balance bike properly with no help from me. Riding around is a breeze and he loves to glide and balance.

I can’t believe my 4 year old just taught himself how to balance on a bike! How awesome is that for their confidence?

riding a balance bike no feet

Several of Andrew’s neighborhood friends have come by our house and commented on his new bike. We had several questions of why the Bicycoo did not have pedals. When we explained how a balance bike will first teach Andrew how to balance and then next year he will be ready for pedals they were amazed. In fact, one of his friends was a 5 year old riding around a big kid bike with training wheels (he seemed a little jealous).

Andrew is so independent with his bike and loves that he can now keep up with the big kids on our street. No seriously, he moves so fast on his balance bike you would never know it didn’t have pedals. I’m such a proud mommy that he taught himself how to balance on a two wheel bike, no feet.

Joovy products are simply amazing, made so well, and the customer service is unmatched. I’m happy to have went with the Bicycoo.

I would actually love to try the Bicycoo. My brother in law and I were just discussing these a couple weeks ago. I can’t get my 4 yr old to ride a bike..he refuses to pedal and my brother in law mentioned a balance bike. He is an avid bike rider (both road and trail) and said it’s more important to learn balancing a bike before pedaling anyway. So yeah, I’m very curious about the Joovy Bicycoo.

Looks like a fun time. I got lucky and my boys learned to ride a 2-wheeler at very young ages (the oldest was just past his 4th birthday and the youngest a couple of weeks past his 3rd). I am an avid biker, using it as a form of transportation around town, so I think that had something to do with it. Something I would recommend is that you make your son wear a helmet. The biggest reason is that it will be much easier to get him to wear one when he gets a little older and is riding in the street. Good luck and I hope everything works for you. Hopefully this prize goes to someone that can really use it.

The Orangie Tricycoo Tricycle would be perfect for my twin granddaughter! She was a late walker, so the cycling would strengthen her legs, let her look like a ‘big girl’, make her PTherapist happy I’ll bet, and help her keep up with the brothers. Thanks for introducing these products; I might just have to buy it for her!
