Magellan’s RoadMate 9055-LM GPS Display with Free Lifetime Updates Review

Magellan RoadMate 9055-LM GPS

Magellan RoadMate 9055-LM GPS

The RoadMate 9055-LM is the first model from Magellan to offer a 7” display screen and free lifetime map updates. Premium features include a one touch favorites menu, advanced Bluetooth technology, free lifetime map updates, lifetime traffic information, and more.

The 7” screen size is perfect for vehicles that are larger in size, such as SUVs, RVs and Mini Vans. We just upgraded our family vehicle to a a full sized mini van and I was super excited to try this GPS out.

There are many things that I like and a few things that I don’t like about this model

Magellan RoadMate 9055-LM GPS

The RoadMate 9055-LM comes with the GPS unit, an extension windshield mount, vehicle power adaptor, handbook and preloaded maps.

Installation

The installation of the RoadMate 9055-LM GPS was my biggest hurdle. The extension windshield mount fit perfectly onto my windshield, however the 7” GPS display was so big that it was an obstruction of view when driving.

The other alternative to the windshield mount was to mount the GPS display onto your center dashboard console. I drive a Toyota Sienna and you can see in the picture above how my dashboard console looks. The only place that I could get the GPS unit to suction to was at the very bottom. This worked great with the exception of two things. The panel that I was able to suction to is a compartment and when the GPS is attached I’m unable to get inside of the compartment. The other problem was that the GPS extension arm crosses over the cup holder.

There are so many curves in my dashboard the extension mount just didn’t work well for me, otherwise the installation would have been perfect with the console mount installation.

The Display

The display is large and beautiful! There is a one touch favorites menu that offers the option to personalize your favorite searches, bookmarks and with a single touch you can quickly find things such as shopping, gas stations, ATMs and so much more.

Bluetooth Technology

I really like the Bluetooth technology that was built into this GPS. You can pair your phone up with the GPS unit and the display works as a speaker phone when talking to your contacts. It was nice to use when the speakerphone on my cell phone wasn’t loud enough to hear the other person.

Real Time Traffic Updates

This is one of my most favorite features of this GPS. From the main display, if there are traffic delays along your route you will be notified with the location and the problem, such as slow traffic or stationary traffic. When you are in a hurry this will help save you valuable time and allow you to change your route if needed.

What I Would Change

With this GPS unit I really miss the capability of seeing the speed limits in the area and my current driving speed. This was a feature on my older GPS unity that I really enjoyed.

The display is beautiful and I love the layout of the features. I would like to see the screen to be a little more touch sensitive as more than slight pressure was needed when selecting features from the display. In today’s world we are used to the touch screens of our phones and tablets, when I’m ready to get on the road and drive I don’t want to be sitting in the parking lot waiting for the GPS unit to read what I just pushed.

The charging cable has to be attached to the mounting display before putting the mount onto the GPS unit. While this provides a more secure connection between the power cord and the GPS unit, there are often times when I will start driving with the GPS unit and decide to plug the cord in later. It becomes cumbersome to remove the GPS from the mount, attach the power cord to the mount and then attach the GPS unit back to the mount.

Overall

The RoadMate 9055-LM Magellan GPS is a good GPS unit, however it just didn’t work well for me. The biggest thing that prevents me from using it is the mounting options and the display size. If you have the proper place to mount a GPS that is 7” in size this would be a great GPS to have. While there are things that I would change about the RoadMate 9055-LM unit, these would not deter me from purchasing this GPS if it had worked for my vehicle’s design.

I’m looking to replace my old GPS with a Magellan. It sounds like it would more than meet my needs. Thanks for the review.

I have an older Magellan and I love it … but … mounting is sometimes a problem and I can imagine that with this larger version, it would really be a problem. I don’t like anything to interfere with my view. I’m pretty sure that the console mount wouldn’t work for me either … there really isn’t a spot for it in my vehicle. Thank you for the review … I like some of the features they’ve improved but I wish they’d find solutions to mounting.

I will be shopping for a GPS in the near future, so thank you for the review. I, like you, love the traffic update feature.

Oh I’ve been thinking about getting a GPS! Like Ashlyn said, the screen on my phone is so small it’s almost a hazard trying to figure it out on the road! 7″ would be great. I bet it would be helpful to know what vehicles this model works well in. I like the idea of knowing ahead of time about traffic delays. Free lifetime map updates?! Brilliant!

Thanks for the great review. I like how large the screen looks for easy viewing, but that’s too bad that it didn’t fit in your vehicle very well. Must have been designed for other vehicles! The Bluetooth technology sounds really though. We don’t have a GPS but I may have to look into getting one. I usually just try to use my cell phone for GPS but the screen is really small and I’d love to have something attached to the car.
