Fun & Easy Sensory Activity with Flour

This morning “B” was extra rambunctious so I knew it was time to find him a new and different activity. I hopped on to Pinterest real quick and found this!

50 activities just for your toddler
Since my husband has a gluten allergy I had a little bit of wheat flour that hadn’t been used in months. “B” followed me to the kitchen where I grabbed a cookie sheet and the container of flour and I told him to go sit at the table. I poured the flour out and his eyes got wide.

Was he allowed to play in this?!

messy flour play

Yes! He played for almost a half hour with very little (for a toddler!) mess and I could see the wheels turning in his head. The flour was so soft and powdery! I gave him a couple of old cookie cutters to use as tools.

What sorts of activities do you break out in a moments notice to keep your toddler busy?

I love this. My little guys love to help me make sugar cookies because they get to play with flour… I forget the JUST flour can be so much fun for them. Thanks :)

I don’t usually do flour because it makes such a mess, but I have done pudding several times. We also like whipped cream here.

My son loves to play with flour! He pretends to bake, and he pretends to build things with it!

I’ve been there! Last time I broke out macaroni, popsicle sticks and glue – that normally sparks one of their imaginations! We also like to add a little milk to that flower and make paper mache!

I let them “paint” on poster board while sitting at the kitchen table. I let them play in old clothes, just in case they happen to touch themselves – or, as is usually the case, each other. I throw the poster board away and have them wash their hands as soon as they are finished, so clean up is a snap.

Pudding! Sounds fun and delicious! What surface do they paint on? How is clean up?

I have used pudding as finger paint to keep them busy. It can be so hard to keep toddlers interested in anything for more than a few minutes, but the pudding works – and I don’t mid them licking their fingers.

You certainly are brave! You should have gave him a couple of eggs and some butter so he could have made you some cookies! My kids are a bit older and luckily they enjoy reading, a lot less messy I’ll tell you that. Often when it’s raining we will break out the Wii or a board game.
