Sniffles. Sneezing. Fever. Aches and Chills. Sound familiar?

My children and I have all been battling these symptoms on and off for the last couple of weeks. This is the first year of school for my 5 year old and I knew that meant he would be bringing home a lot of new germs. We have taken the precautions to prevent illness, but we aren’t always so lucky.

So you have gotten sick, now what?

Here are a few tips and tricks that we have used to beat the cold and flu, while reviving our spirit.

Tips to beat the cold and flu

    • Cleaning & SanitizingThis is an obvious one, but not everyone thinks of it. When illness has struck our house we do what we can to minimize germs. We do this by wiping down door knobs, reminding our children to wash their hands, wiping toys down with antibacterial wipes and cleaning tables after Kleenex has been laying around.

    • HumidifiersRunny noses and congestion is hard to deal with. Even harder at night when you are trying to sleep. A cool mist humidifier is great to have in the bedroom as they keep the air moist and help relieve congestion.

    • DietEating healthy and taking your vitamins is an important step in getting over an illness. Chicken soup is always associated with being sick, it’s a great comfort food and helps to give you more energy. If you are sick with the Flu, things like toast and crackers are great for a weak stomach. Foods loaded in vitamin C are important to help you strengthen the immune system. Things like cottage cheese and yogurt are easy on the digestive system and loaded with protein.

    • Comfort ItemsBeing sick is no fun, specially for kids. Here are a few things that we do to boost spirits.
Popsicles are perfect for soothe sore throats, coloring books and puzzles are good boredom busters, tissues for runny noses, cough and cold medicines to ease discomfort, cozy blankets for snuggling up on the couch and lots of TLC.
