Do You Need a New Mattress?

Mattresses are one of those home products that many of us let fall by the wayside when moving, renovating, or just redecorating. They’re often “inherited” from one sibling to another within the household, and slept on for many years. Mattresses are a big, important purchase, but it’s also necessary to replace them every so often to ensure that we’re getting the best possible night’s sleep and not harming our backs, necks, and posture.

UntitledWe typically spend about one-third of our lives in bed, so it’s important that we update our mattresses as needed.  Some experts say they should be replaced around every 5-7 years, while others say every 8-10 years. Either way, changes in our bodies, such as pregnancies, surgeries, and more can affect our mattress’ condition. So if you find yourself wondering if a new mattress is in order, there’s a good chance that it is!

Mattress shopping can be fairly daunting, however; there are so many brands, styles, and sizes to choose from. Do you need a California king or will a queen-size do? Should you stick with a standard spring mattress, or does memory foam sound like a good fit? Pillow-top or feather-top? There’s a dizzying array of choices, but you can leave a lot of the guesswork out of it by shopping online. Retailers like ShopNBC, for example, sell a wide variety of mattresses complete with customer reviews and detailed product descriptions to aid in your decision. They also sell many trusted brands, such as popular Serta mattresses. Whatever brand or style you decide, it may be easier to find it online than in the store – and will certainly save you loads of time!

I need a new one that’s for sure! It’s so hard shopping for one. I swear they always feel different once it’s home.

We need a new mattress in a BAD way. Sadly, every time we get enough spare cash saved to buy one, some emergancy comes up that the money has to be used for.

Great article! I like the idea to find a new bed online instead of a store.

We’ve had our mattress for a little over 6 years now. It started to get pretty uncomfortable, but then we got rid of our box springs, and went with a platform frame. It’s been nicer since that change. Hubs and I bother each other less dring our sleep, because we just don’t notice the other one moving.

We need a new mattress desperately. But not sure what kind of mattress to get. I will definitely do more research online before we go shopping. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the reminder of the benefits of online shopping. I guess the thought never crossed my mind to shop for a mattress online…when I’m in the market for a new mattress, I’ll have to see what’s out there to comparison shop (although I think I’d end up purchasing something like that at a store so I can give it a test drive for comfort, firmness, etc).

I love(d) my mattress but after it was in storage for 6 months in a vertical position it hasn’t been the same. We are definitely going to need a new one soon. I wish they lasted longer!

That’s a good point to shop online for a mattress first, then go to a store to try them out.

I definitely need to buy a new mattress. Mine is almost 10 years old. There’s a depression in the middle of the mattress and it’s not good for my lower back.

Dear Lord, there are few things I hate in this world more than picking out a new mattress! I think I’d rather have a root canal.

We FINALLY got a new mattress, and needed it badly. We also upgraded from a Queen to Cal King which is sooooooooo nice. I’m having a hard time getting sheets to fit though. If it says Cal King it should fit right?? ARG. We got a few month old Tempurpedic from a friend that just got married and didn’t need it. If it wasn’t such a killer price there’s no way we would have spent the 6K that thing costs retail. I’m surprised at how much I like it though.

I love my mattress, were it not for the fact that it gets so darn hot!

That is one thing about memory foam I wish I’d known about before I purchased it.
