D-Link MovieNite Plus | Our Switch Away From Cable

The D-Link MovieNite Plus has changed the way that we watch TV.

With recent job changes, the up and down economy, and uncertainties all around us, I decided to make some changes and reduce what we could in our monthly bills.

First stop. Good-Bye Cable.

We were paying $100+ a month for cable and internet, while internet isn’t negotiable for us the cable was. My husband and I found that the majority of shows that we watched on cable were reruns, hardly ever do we sit down to watch a new episode of something on the same night that it was aired. So why not try something like Netflix?

We decided to give the D-Link MovieNite Plus and Netflix a try before making the decision to remove our cable subscription.

What is the D-Link MovieNite Plus?

The D-Link MovieNite Plus is a streaming media box that you can attach to your TV and it will allow you to stream music, movies, TV shows and more.

Features:

  • Quick and easy setup
  • FullHD 1080 Home Theater experience
  • Stream content from services such as Netflix, Pandora, YouTube, Vudu and more
  • Connect with your MyDLink camera to watch your baby or kids in another room, all from your TV
  • Additional Apps to provide you with endless entertainment options

The interface comes with six featured apps, Netflix, Vudu HD, YouTube, Pandora, Picassa, and AcuWeather. Four of these main apps can be started directly from the remote control with a single button. Additionally, there are sub menus that will provide nearly a hundred apps for other sources of entertainment.

The Netflix option was our main interest, as we were looking for the alternative to having cable. While the MovieNite Plus will stream Netflix, you will need to purchase a Netflix subscription to do so. At $7.99 a month we are able to stream hundreds of TV shows and movies, as many as we want to watch, and up to 3 devices at a time. $7.99 a month sure beats the cost that we were paying for cable.

movies on demand

After first night we were impressed, my kids were able to watch all of their favorite Nickelodeon shows just as before, my husband had many of his favorite FOX TV shows, and the selection of movies are endless. It truly was nice to watch a movie, on demand when I wanted, and not have to worry about returning it to avoid late fees.

The streaming quality is fantastic! Occasionally our internet will give us some trouble and cause the movie to “Buffer”, but majority of the time our selected movie or show would load right up and play through without problems.

If you own a D-Link camera, the MovieNite Plus will allow you to connect to the camera within your home. You can watch your baby, or kids from another room, all from the big screen on your TV. While I do like this feature and the option to watch our children from the other room, we didn’t use this a whole lot. It works great and would be an added bonus should you need something like this.

How the D-Link MovieNite Plus worked for us

We have been using the MovieNite Plus for a few months now. Our needs were met with the Netflix subscription and we have officially been without cable since July 2012. Since the Netflix subscription can be streamed onto 3 devices at the same time, we decided to purchase two other D-Link MovieNite Plus boxes for our other bedrooms. Also, when we are away from home the Netflix shows can also be streamed from our smart phones. This has saved us a number of times when waiting at doctors offices, restaurants, and even on long car rides.

We have had the opportunity to try other streaming media brands before the D-Link MovieNite Plus and I feel that this device is near my top choice. The low end price really gives you many of the same features as other high end devices on the market. The D-Link MovieNite Plus is a great option for those looking to stream media from their TVs and is great as an add-on or replacement to your cable subscription.
