These baked donuts with a chocolate frosting glaze are not only beautiful to look at, they are so fluffy and tasty too!

Last weekend, we celebrated my daughter’s 7th birthday and she requested some of my famous baked donuts for breakfast, the ones with chocolate frosting she says.

How could I resist? These baked donuts with a chocolate frosting glaze are so easy to make and can be whipped up in less than 30 minutes.

Last week, I shared my donut recipe for baked cinnamon sugar pumpkin spice donuts. They were amazing, so light and fluffy! This was the first recipe since my purchase of the Wilton donut pans. If you have been considering getting some of these, do it!

You can make impressive donuts for your family, bring them to work for your co-workers to brag about. It’s great to be able to make donuts, in no time at all, with less than half the calories and still enjoy them as much as the real deal.

Alternative option if you don’t have a donut pan : Use a mini muffin pan and bake as normal. This will give you donut holes! They can still be dipped, sprinkled and enjoyed.

I love donuts with a serious passion. My family loves them too! And I’m sure you do as well… as you are here for this delicious donut recipe.

But, the bad part about eating donuts is that we always have a sense of guilt when we eat them. Am I right? We eat them, then feel the need to punish ourselves the rest of the day to make up for it.

Baking donuts is such a great alternative to fried donuts and when they are made with the right recipe, they taste just as amazing.

So, I’m here to not call this a healthy donut recipe. But I’m calling this a health{ier} way to enjoy those donuts, whenever you like, and not feel the horrible guilt when doing it.

Make all the donuts!!

Ingredients

  • Donuts :
  • 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 2/3 all purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • Frosting:
  • 3 tbsp butter, cut into pieces
  • 3/4 semi-sweet chocolate chips (milk, dark or whatever your heart desires!)
  • 1 tbsp sugar or honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Prepare your donut pans and grease them with a non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the butter, oil, granulated and brown sugar until smooth. Works best with an electric mixer. Add in the eggs and continue mixing until well combined.
  3. Add in the baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, salt and vanilla. Mix until well combined.
  4. Mix in the flour and milk, alternating the two until it's all added. Mix until well combined.
  5. Spoon or pipe the donut batter into your donut pans, filling each well about 3/4 of the way full. Bake for 9-10 minutes. When done, allow to cool before frosting.
  6. Prepare your frosting while the donuts are cooling. In a double broiler, or on the stove with low heat, mix together your chocolate chips, butter and sugar/honey. When melted, it's ready to go!
  7. Dip each donut, face down, into the frosting and place onto a cooling rack. Add your sprinkles, or other toppings, and allow the icing to harden a little. Best served warm! Still great cooled.

  • Hi Amanda!! Quick question about your recipe for the Chocolate Frosted Donuts. In your Ingredients you only said granulated sugar, but in the recipe you said in a mixing bowl add butter, oil, granulated AND brown sugar...?? If brown sugar is in the recipe how much is needed or was that an error?
